Communication Vital To New Kennedy School Principal

Twyla Sprouse understands a parent’s anxiety on their firstborn child’s first day of Kindergarten; afterall, the new Kennedy Primary School (grades K-1) principal also is a mother.

“I really feel communication is critical because they are sending us their children, trusting us to educate them and take care of them and make sure they are safe,” Sprouse says. “I’m trying to make things easily accessible for parents, whether it’s on the website or sending home paper copies, I want to have things where people can find them easily and have access to what’s going on in the school and the classroom every day.”

Sprouse also plans to be a visible principal by being in the classroom, greeting parents outdoors when children arrive and are picked up, and being involved in the community. Formerly an assistant principal at a Manhattan elementary school, the Louisiana native is excited about fulfilling her career goal of being a school principal in the community she’s called home for the past five years.

“I truly believe all students can be successful with a combined rapport between the school, families and the community helping students grow and learn.”

But should a question or concern arise?

“I think two of my strengths are listening to people and problem solving,” she says.

Her advice to parents new to the school system is simple. Get involved.

“I encourage parents to participate in the PTO (a parents’ organization) or other volunteer opportunities at the school.”
